The Business Case for the MBTI®
You already know that we are all so very different and that these differences impact on your business performance. Personality is not, however, something that we can switch off and leave at home. Our personality is a fundamental part of who we are. It is with us always, whether we are at home or at work. Truly acknowledging, understanding and working with personality difference is definitely a fast-track method to achieving high performance and more effective team working.
Unlike many other psychometric tools, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) is not a test. Instead, it indicates a person's clarity for a set of preferences. Understanding both your own and your team's Type's (or preferences) can help in a number of ways, not least by improving communication, resolving conflict and identifying areas for team and personal development.
What is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator®?
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator® is based on the work of Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and his theory of personality preferences. In the 1940's, mother and daughter team Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs-Myers took his work and created the first version of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® - a personality type inventory that described an individual's personality preferences on 4 scales (or dichomoties).
The four Jungian dichotomies are:
- How we are energised - Extraversion or Intorversion
- The type of information we prefer to pay attention to - Sensing or iNtuition
- How we prefer to make decisions - Thinking or Feeling
- The lifestyle we prefer to lead - Judging or Perceiving
The MBTI® was the first questionnaire that made use of Jung's work and made it accessable to the larger population. In it's current form, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® is a statistically valid and reliable tool which has over 60 years of research behind it. Currently over 3 million people each year complete the MBTI® making it the most popular personality inventory currently available.
